Horror Trailer Creating the Dark Dramatic Make-Up

For our trailer we needed to make the make up look like she was tired and drained of energy which is relevant to the character she was being. As you can see we have outlined her cheeks and nose to make the look drawn in and we have also made her eyes very dark to make her look more evil. We also decided to out line her jaw, neck and collar bones to make her look like she was sick and not well which was effective when we were filming.

Horror Trailer Costume

Our horror trailer used minimal costume as we decided to use our own clothes as this we were just normal young girls at the beginning of our trailer so we didn't need to get dressed up for this occasion.

Charlotte then had an idea of using a type of long dress that would be equivalent to an old fashioned dress which is common within horror films. We then all looked at certain costumes and I pulled out an old costume which was of the type Charlotte was describing and this was the dress that was eventually used:

Horror Trailer Props

Within our horror trailer we didn't really use many props. The Main prop which we did use was the book itself as this is what the trailer was based on. We also had the use of a saw and a rocking horse which we want to use within our trailer as these both create effect and these will come into practice when we begin filming the trailer.

We decided to spend a day where we created our book. Charlotte brought the book to my house and we all had a go of making the book look ripped, old and disturbed. We first decided that some of the pages need to be wrote on so we all took turns in writing on different pages of the book in old joined up writing. I then decided to get an old feather pen and ink to write the sayings in which were 'New Victims,' 'You Find Me,' 'I Have Your Soul' and 'Death's Due.'' We decided to write in this type of way ask the ink was red which looks like it is wrote in blood. We then decided to spread tomato ketchup all over the pages of the book and we also used a tea bag to splash what looked like dirt on the pages and we then used a black fine liner and dipped it in water to make the ink run down the edge of the pages making it look old and dirty. We then got a fork and scrapped the front and back pages making it look as though someone had been scratching the book, we then ripped the pages and wrote 'Keep Out' on the front page using the feather pen and red ink again making it look like it was wrote in blood. We then began to bend and rip pages in the book to make it look like it had been damage over many years and by the end of it the book actually looked like a possessed diary.

Assigning Roles

When we are creating our horror trailer we needed to assign certain roles for each of us to have. Firstly we instantly assigned Ashley the role of the editor, this was due to the fact that she has had previous experience in editing things together on IMovie which me, Charlotte and Jodie have not done before therefore this made sense that Ashley would edit our trailer together. We then assigned Charlotte of the creative role of making our horror trailer scripts, story boards, deciding the costumes and the locations in which she thought would be most effective for the shots. We were then left with the role of camera work and filming which me and Jodie decided to split due to the fact that filming takes a lot of focus and we need to get things very precise in order to make the shots work which is important and by having two different opinions when filming we could each spot certain errors which have occurred or may occur during the editing process that the other may not have saw before.

Naomi Wolf Theory

Naomi Wolf is considered to be an American feminist who believe that media products use woman as a source of attraction and believes that if a woman is used within media products then it is likely to sell more.

She believes that women have been conditioned into aspiring to look like models and females  who are considered to be gorgeous. She states that when women look at women within media products they will instantly compare themselves to the model on the screen or on magazines and they will pick out all of the negative aspects of themselves and will aspire to be like the women they see in media products.

When existing media products use females they will place them in poses that suggest that female sexuality is replaced by the means of beauty and this shows that women are putting themselves in competition with one another yet most women don’t see their bodies as a source of pleasure.

In order to incorporate this theory into my work we decided to use an attractive young female within our trailer and our ancillary tasks so that this theory could be incorporated within out work

Filming Day One

Filming Day One:

Today myself, Ashley, Charlotte and Jodie decided to begin filming for our trailer, however we didn't have a full understanding of what we actually wanted to do for our trailer at this point so we decided to record things in which we though would be good for our trailer. What we did do today was figure out what type of shots we could get and we practiced zooming, panning, close ups, long shots, and medium shots in order for us to get experience in using these shots.
The first thing we did was try to get the establishing shot of the model house which we wanted to use as this house from the outside looked like a stereotypical house which you'd find in horror movies. It was quite dark so what we needed to get some light on the camera so we used our phone torches and while shinning the light we were able to make it look like an orb flying past the house which looked rather creepy which we though could be useful within our trailer. We also go close ups of the house name which was Catville which we thought could be effective. We also did a panning shot of the dark horizon which was foggy and this brought up an eerie feeling.

Once we had finished getting the shots outside we decided to go inside and figure out what we needed to do next. We all gave ideas of what we think would have been effective within our trailer and then we decided that whispers would be good but in order for us to relate these to our story we decided that we would say dates within the diary which is where the activity takes place. We chose four particular dates which were, 'November 16th,' said by Ashley, 'December 21st,' said by Jodie, 'January 24th,' said by myself and 'February 27th,' said by Charlotte' we then added an occasion where the activity build on each of these days and these were, 'New victims,' said by Ashley 'you find me,' said by Jodie, 'I have your soul,' said by myself and 'death's due,' said by Charlotte. We then decided to make these reading more intense by combining them all together to make it sound like a muffle of voices which created great intensity for our trailer. We decided to use these dates as it would correlate to the month in which the film is due to premier so we decided to spread it across four months keeping it close within the season of winter. Finally we recorded Jodie's little sister screaming as it is common for horror trailers to use this technique as it gives the audience a shock and would make our target audience want to go and see the film.
